The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao project in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve has once again been awarded a Black Flag by Ekologistak Martxan for its disastrous management.

Moving forward with this project means the total destruction of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. The Basque Government, the PNV (Basque Nationalist Party), and Lehendakari Iñigo Pradales are doing everything in their power to push the project forward, modifying laws or obtaining coastal jurisdiction transfers to remove obstacles to the project. The current Lehendakari, Iñigo Pradales, took over from José Luis Bilbao as the project’s foremost champion back when he was Deputy for Public Works and Services in the Bizkaia Provincial Council, and he continues to defend it staunchly—whether by contradicting former Lehendakari Urkullu regarding the two-year moratorium, or by leading the delegation that the Basque Government sent to the Guggenheim Foundation to defend the project’s validity in the face of opposition.
